Frozen meals make life so much easier for busy mamas who have a long to-do list every single day. Let’s be honest: there are days when everything goes smooth like butter and there are days when nothing goes the way you planned and sometimes you end up with only 5 minutes to make a delicious dinner for you and your family. That is when frozen meals can save your day.
When buying freezer meals I look for delicious meals made like I make them, using cooking techniques like grilling and roasting – just like I do at home. Frozen meals with ingredients I can pronounce, found in my own pantry, with no artificial flavors. I want real and simple meals that use smart cooking methods like grilling chicken or roasting veggies for flavor. My family deserves smart and delicious options when I don’t cook – that is why today I will compare one of the frozen meals made by SMARTMADE ™ by SmartOnes (R) called White Wine Chicken with Couscous with homemade version of the same meal to show you how SmartMade cooks their frozen meals just like you do at home. A delicious meal made of real ingredients.
First I bought a SMARTMADE frozen meal from my local Walmart store in the freezer aisle. Then I looked at the ingredients on the back of the meal box. I created a recipe, my own version of White Wine Chicken with Couscous. After I cooked the recipe I compared my homemade meal with the store-bought frozen meal.

First I marinated chicken over night:
5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced in half
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
black pepper to taste
How to marinate & grill chicken:
Grill on high for 3 minutes each side or until chicken is cooked. While grilling chicken, I drizzled olive oil over vegetables and seasoned them with salt and pepper and added them to the grill. I used Roma tomatoes, eggplant, red onion and zucchini.
Then I made couscous:
1 cup water
1/3 cup white cooking wine
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
1 cup couscous
How to make couscous:
Using pan combine water, white wine, butter and salt. Bring it to a boil. Turn off the heat and stir in couscous. Cover and let it sit for 5 minutes. Serve warm.
Homemade Vs SMARTMADE
After cooking my version of White Wine Chicken with Couscous I prepared the SMARTMADE frozen meal using instructions on the back of the box, then I did some taste testing.
My homemade meal took me much more time to make and at the end it tasted just as delicious and scrumptious as the SMARTMADE meal, except mine had less moisture.
