Split Pea Soup Instant Pot & Stove Top Recipe with Turkey & Bacon

Now, who wants a bowl of flavorful soup?  I know I do.  Specially when it is a split pea soup with smoked turkey.

It was shared by my sweet middle school classmate.  Thank you Verachka for the recipe!

Quick Notes & Tips

  • Save bones for Bone Broth, by freezing them inside the freezer bag.
  • Adjust this recipe by adding ingredients or spices that you like to add in soups like chopped celery or turmeric spice.
  • Store leftover soup in the pot with a lid inside the fridge for up to 3 days.

How to make Split Pea Soup?

Place smoked turkey wings into big pot with 8-10 cups of water, bring it to a boil and cook on medium heat for 30-40 minutes.

Remove the turkey wings and cut them into bite size pieces then return it back to the pot.

Turkey meat inside the pot. Add split peas, bring it to a boil and cook for 30 minutes.

Saute bacon inside the skillet for soup garnish.Meanwhile, using a skillet, saute bacon for 5 minutes on medium heat. Then add chopped onion and carrot and saute for 10 more min. Remove the bacon grease if you want.

Add saute bacon and onion to the pot with cubed potatoes, bay leaves, salt and pepper.

Split Pea Soup With Smocked Turkey & Bacon.Cook for about 5-10 minutes or until potato is soft. Serve with freshly chopped dill or any greens of your choice (I used frozen chopped organic dill). Enjoy!

How to make Instant Pot Split Pea Soup?

First, turn it ON on saute mode then add bacon pieces and saute for 5 minutes, stirring few times.
How to make Instant Pot soup.
Next, add onion and saute for 5-10 minutes or until onion is soft. Transfer to a plate.
Pour 8 cups of water into the Instant Pot and add smoked turkey wings.
Pour 8 cups of water into the Instant Pot and add smoked turkey wings. Cover the lid & place steam valve in a sealing position,and cook on high pressure or SOUP/BROTH mode for about 15 minutes.
Place all ingredients into Instant Pot.

Quick Release the Pressure. Transfer turkey wings on to a cutting board and cut the meat into bite size pieces, then return it back into the pot. Add 1 cup of split peas, 3 cups of potatoes, 2-3 bay leaves and one cubed carrot.

 

Cover the lid & place steam valve in a sealing position,and cook on high pressure or SOUP/BROTH mode for another 15 minutes.

Quick Release the Pressure. Stir in saute bacon with onion and season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with fresh dill & serve with Homemade Bread. Enjoy!

How Long to Cook Split Peas?

It takes about 40 minutes to cook soaked peas. Unsoaked split peas take about 1 hour long to cook.

  • 6 strips bacon cut into small pieces
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 cup yellow split peas washed
  • 3 cups potato cubed
  • 1 carrot cubed or grated

  • fresh dill chopped
