Are you craving a delicious savory sandwich that takes almost no time to prepare? Then you have to try my Cheesy Hot Beef Sandwich Recipe! The thick ground beef filling is so creamy and full of flavor, just like a classic sloppy joe.
This sandwich is almost similar to a Philly cheesesteak sandwich or a ground beef sandwich melt. Load your hoagie bun with the Montreal steak spiced ground beef, peppers, garlic, cheese, and cream of mushroom sauce. Once it all cooks together, it turns into a kid-friendly dinner or snack.
Serve these hot and cheesy sandwiches next to my homemade Cream Of Mushroom Soup and a Vanilla Cake Pop for dessert. It’s the best comfort food that’s easy to prepare ahead of time and delicious any time of day.
Ground beef sandwich ingredients
This ground beef and cheese sandwich has everything you love about a classic sloppy joe but uses a smaller list of pantry-staple ingredients. Here’s what you need:
- Hoagie rolls
- Ground beef
- Mccormick's Montreal Steak Spice or homemade Montreal Steak Spice
- Onion and garlic
- Green bell peppers
- Cream of mushroom soup
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cheddar cheese
How to Make Hot Beef Sandwiches
Step 1: Cook the ground beef and onion in a skillet with some oil. Season with Montreal Steak Spice before adding the bell pepper and garlic.
Step 3: Turn off the heat and stir in the cheese. Spoon the filling into your hoagie rolls and enjoy!
Recipe tips and substitutions
- If your sandwich filling mixture is too thick, mix in a few tablespoons of milk to make it more creamy and thin.
- Drain the beef grease if there’s too much fat, or use a leaner ground beef.
- If you don’t want to make your own cream of mushroom soup, use a 10.5 oz. can of store-bought cream of mushroom soup instead.
- If you love spicy food, mix a teaspoon of sriracha into the filling or top the sandwich with pickled jalapeno slices.
- Skip the buns and mix the sandwich filling with cooked pasta for a cheesy hamburger helper copycat recipe!
- Top your sandwiches with more cheese, parsley, red pepper flakes, or cilantro.
Can this be made ahead of time?
The ground beef filling can be made a couple of days ahead of time. Just keep it in a sealed container in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble the sandwiches.
It’s also freezer-friendly! When the beef has cooled, place it in an airtight container or ziploc bag. Freeze it for up to 3 months and let it thaw completely in the fridge before reheating.
Storing and reheating leftovers
Make sure the leftovers are completely cool before you store them away. You can keep the leftover beef filling in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
To reheat, place the leftovers in a skillet over medium heat and cook until they’re warmed through. Feel free to mix in a little more milk to help it thin out.

Looking forward to trying this next week. Question though, the recipe calls for cream of mushroom soup, but the pictures look like it's golden mushroom soup instead, which is it? Thanks!
Munchkin Time
Hi Jessie! I used homemade cream of mushroom soup, this is the recipe I used https://www.munchkintime.com/cream-of-mushroom-soup-recipe/ you can use canned soup of mushroom soup or homemade 😃😃😃 hope this helps!
Eva Gehrke
Very good! Definitely be making again.

I haven't made this yet. Have a question. Is there anything that can be substituted for the mushroom soup? Can't eat mushrooms.
Munchkin Time
You could try cheese soup or cream of chicken soup, I haven't tried it yet, but I heard people like to use these soups instead of mushroom soup.
Alexis Marshall
I am making this tonight and not using cream of mushroom. I have some leftover heavy whipping cream and I'm going to add some beef broth in that. If it's not thick enough I'm going to use some flour. I'll give an update on after it's made.
Munchkin Time
Sounds wonderful, Alexis!
Darlene Higgins
I don't like mushrooms or mushroom soup . Is there a sub for it that would still make it creamy ?
Munchkin Time
Yes, you could try cream of chicken soup instead 😀
Alexa
Does the cream of mushroom soup go into the meat mixture or get served as a side? That step is kind of confusing. Thanks!
Munchkin Time
Hi, Alexa! Yes, 1 1/4 cup goes into the meat mixture.
Dee Hawthorne
Made this for the first time tonight. My family loved it,I will definitely be making this again😍
Munchkin Time
Thank you, Dee! I am so happy your family loved them! 🤗🤗🤗
Linda B
I made it as stated except substituted cream of bacon soup and was perfect 👌.
Munchkin Time
Hi Linda, cream of bacon soup sounds incredibly delicious! Thank you for your awesome recipe review, so glad you liked this beef sandwich recipe!
Sherry
I used ground bison, and it was really good! I think I overdid the cheese a little, but that’s my own fault. Next time, I’ll add the steak sauce, like a reviewer up above did...it needed just a little more zip.
Munchkin Time
Thank you for sharing your recipe review, Sherry! Steak sauce in this sandwich's filling sounds delicious!
Amber
First time making this and I had to make some adjustments since I didn’t have all the ingredients. I omitted the green peppers, substituted the seasoning for Morton season all, subbed in cream of chicken, and added Colby cheese instead of cheddar. I had to adjust the measurements and overall it was pretty good.
It turned a bit too creamy so I lessened the amount of cheese and added sriracha to cut the creaminess. I also served it with some pickles.
Munchkin Time
Thank you, Amber for sharing your recipe review! Sounds super delicious the way you adjusted this recipe.
Josiah Adam John
Made it the first time a few weeks ago using Ground Turkey and the family loved it! Making it again tonight using leftover pot roast.
Munchkin Time
Thats awesome, Josiah! I am glad you enjoyed this recipe!
Roxanne Thorman
I just made this tonight, however I omitted the cream of mushroom because I am not a fan of mushrooms. I did add everything else and I added steak sauce to it which gave it a steak flavor. Loved this thanks!!
lisa
Roxanne, how much steak sauce did you use? Also, which brand/kind, i e., Heinz 57 or A-1?
Thanks!lisa
Dawn
Can't wait to try, it looks delish! I'm thinking, just reading the ingredients, that this might be delicious over pasta. Hmmmm. Will have to try both and let you know.
Munchkin Time
I think it will be perfect over pasta!
Elizabeth Rosenberg
Hi! I’m allergic to mushrooms. Normally I would substitute cream of chicken. Would you recommend that? Thanks!
Munchkin Time
I haven't substituted it with cream of chicken but I heard people like using cream of chicken, cream of celery or cream of cheese soups in recipe like this. Hope this helps! Please let me know if you make it with cream of chicken soup.
Evelyn
I didn’t see Montreal steak spice as an ingredient when I went shopping. Any recommendations for substitution?
Munchkin Time
Sorry about that, Evelyn! You can use salt and pepper with sprinkle of garlic and onion powder, or just salt and pepper. Hope this helps!
Ruby
Finger licking good. Thank you so much for sharing. Hello from India.
Munchkin Time
Thank you so much Ruby for an amazing recipe review! I am so glad you find this sandwich recipe finger licking good!!!
Laura
Are you supposed to drain the meat after cooking it with the onion?
Munchkin Time
Hi Laura! That's a great question! If ground beef has a lot of fat in it I would drain it, I usually buy ground beef with less fat and I don't drain it after cooking with onion. Hope this helps!
