Easy 1-Hour Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

These cinnamon rolls are soft, fluffy, and filled with a sweet cinnamon-sugar mixture that will satisfy any sweet tooth. Best of all, you don’t have to wait for hours for them to rise! With just a little bit of planning and some simple ingredients, you can have these delightful rolls ready in about an hour.

For the Dough:

1 cup milk
¼ cup butter
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour divided 3 cups & ½ cups
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 ¼ teaspoons instant or ‘rapid rise’ yeast
1 egg

For the Filling:

⅓ cup granulated sugar
⅓ cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
¼ cup butter softened

For the Icing:

1 ½ cup powdered sugar
1-2 tablespoon milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for added flavor)

Instructions

Prepare the Milk and Yeast: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine milk and butter. Heat in the microwave for about 1 minute, stirring every 20 seconds, until the butter is melted and milk is warm.
Remove from microwave and allow to cool to warm temperature (not hot). Sprinkle yeast over the warm milk mixture, stir gently, and set aside for about 5 minutes until frothy.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups of flour, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and salt. Set aside.
Combine Ingredients: In a stand mixer bowl, combine the flour mixture with the egg and milk-yeast mixture. Using the dough hook, mix on medium-low speed until a shaggy dough forms.
If the dough sticks to the bowl, gradually add the remaining ½ cup of flour, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides.
Knead the Dough: Continue mixing for an additional 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes in a very warm place (like inside the turned off oven with the lights on).
Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the filling. Mix well and set aside.
Roll the Dough: On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle approximately 14 x 9 inches. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface of the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly.
Shape the Rolls: Roll the dough tightly from the 14-inch edge. If desired, trim the ends for a neater finish. Use dental floss or a sharp knife to cut the roll into 10-12 equal pieces.
Rise the Rolls: Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise in a warm place for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Make the Icing: In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract (if using), whisking until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
Bake: Once the rolls have risen, uncover and bake them in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
