    Bulgarian Baklava Recipe (Walnut pie)

    Delicious Bulgarian Baklava Recipe (Walnut pie) - flaky and super crispy but moist at the same time.  This Walnut Pie is made of crispy filo pastry and lots of nuts.  Next, every two layers are filled with buttery almond mixture, follow by 2 caramelized hazelnut layers in between.  YOU are going to love the hint of the lemon juice being soaked in every bite. It is so good!

    Ingredients YOU will need to make Bulgarian Baklava Recipe:

    • 3½ cups walnuts, chopped
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 1½ cups ground or chopped almonds
    • 2 cups butter, melted - reserve 2 tablespoons for brushing the dough.
    • 40 sheets filo pastry, thawed

    How to make Baklava:

    Step One

    First, preheat the oven to 350 F.  Then, grease 9 by 13 inches pan and set aside.

    Step Two

    Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl combine 3½ cups chopped walnuts and 1 cup of powdered sugar. In a different bowl combine 1½ cup ground almonds and 2 cups of butter minus 2 tablespoons.

    Step Three

    Place your 2 filo sheets into a pan (make sure you cover the rest of the filo pastry with a towel to prevent from getting dry). Brush about 2 tablespoons of almond and butter mixture over the pastry sheet. Repeat this step total of 5 times. Now spread half of the walnut mixture over 11th filo sheet.

    Step Four

    Place another 2 filo sheets on top of the walnut mixture, then brush 2 tablespoons of almond mixture. Repeat total of 5 times.

    Step Five

    Spread the rest of the walnut mixture, gently pressing on the dough. Place another 2 filo sheets on top and brush 2 tablespoons of almond mixture. Repeat this step total of 5 times. Place the last 8 filo sheets on top.

    Step Six

    Brush 2 tablespoons of butter that you reserved over the last filo sheets. Using a knife cut the Baklava into small diamond shapes.

    Step Seven

    Bake Baklava for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes reduce the heat to 275F and cook for 2 more hours. After it's done baking let it cool.

    Ingredients YOU will need for the Baklava Syrup:

    • 1½ cups powdered sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • juice and zest of 1 lemon
    • melted chocolate for garnish, optional
    • ground almonds for garnish, optional
    To make Baklava Syrup: In a small sauce pan add 1½ cup powdered sugar and 1 cup of water. Bring it to a boil, reduce the heat and cook for 15 minutes. Add lemon juice and zest, then remove from the heat. Using a spoon, spoon the hot syrup over the cooled Baklava. Cover with a towel and let it set in the dry place over the night. Drizzle melted chocolate over the Paklava and sprinkle ground almonds. Enjoy!
