How to Make this Christmas Puff Pastry Dessert
Step 1: Place one of the puff pastry circles onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and greased with a thin layer of oil.

Step 2: Spread an even layer of strawberry jam over top of the puff pastry, and place the second puff pastry sheet on top.

Step 3: Place the bottom of a glass over the middle of the puff pastry circle. Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut 16 even slits from the edge of the glass to the outer edge of the dough.

Step 4: Next, take 2 strips at a time (one in each hand) and twist each one outward. Now that you have two spiraled strips, bring them together and pinch the ends. Repeat with remaining strips.
Step 5: Cover it with plastic wrap and let that rise for about 30 minutes until the over preheats to 425°F.

Step 6: Once you’re ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap and brush the pastry with egg wash. Bake for 20-22 minutes in the middle rack until it’s golden and flaky.

Step 7: Remove the strawberry puff pastry dessert from the oven, sprinkle it with powdered sugar, and enjoy while it’s warm for breakfast, brunch, or dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Expert Tips
- Puff pastry needs to be thawed, but kept cold. If it gets too warm, chill it in the fridge for a few minutes.
- Best enjoyed warm, but can be enjoyed at room temperature or even cold (you know when you go back to the fridge at midnight for leftovers!)
- When cutting the slices, I like to cut the dough in half, then half again, and then again and again until you get 16 strips.
- Seal the strips well to avoid too much escape filling.
- Let it cool slightly, as it is very hot once it is out of the oven.
- If you’re not using oil to prevent sticking, use a light dusting of flour instead.
Recipe FAQs
Turn this strawberry dessert recipe into a different flavor by using another kind of filling. Raspberry jam, blackberry jam, cherry jam, peach jam, or even Nutella would be great.
You could also use the filling from my rugelach cookies made with pecans, chocolate chips, and huckleberry jam.
I don’t recommend it, unless you’re going to thicken it and make your own strawberry sauce like what you’d find on my strawberry cheesecake recipe. Otherwise stick with a jam.
Due to the nature of the twists, some of it will sneak out of the creases. However, sealing the ends of the pastry dough as best as you can will help.
I love the look of the powdered sugar, but you can certainly use granulated sugar instead, if preferred. A dusting of cinnamon sugar mixture is also great.
Yes! You can assemble the snowflake and prepare it for baking. Cover it with plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge for up to 12 hours. Bake it just before serving.

Strawberry Snowflake Dessert Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry circle shape, or cut into circle shapes, thawed
- 1 cup strawberry jam
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- avocado oil for greasing baking sheet
- powdered sugar for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it with oil or melted butter. Thaw the puff pastry using instructions on the package, then place one sheet onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Add the Filling: Spread the strawberry jam evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges. Place the second sheet of puff pastry directly on top, gently pressing to seal.
- Shape the Snowflake: Place a glass cup in the center of the pastry to mark the middle. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into 16 equal strips, starting from the edge of the glass and working outward (cut in halves, then quarters, then eighths for even slices).
- Twist the Dough: Working with two strips at a time, twist each strip outward, then pinch the ends together to form one “arm” of the snowflake. Repeat with the remaining strips.
- Proof the Pastry: Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let the pastry rest at room temperature until slightly puffed. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C)..
- Brush & Bake: Whisk the egg with water to make an egg wash and brush evenly over the pastry. Bake on the middle rack until golden brown and flaky.
- Finish & Serve: Remove from the oven and dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm for the best texture and flavor.

Notes
- Jam options: Strawberry works beautifully, but raspberry, apricot, Nutella or mixed berry jam are great swaps.
- Seal the layers well: Gently pressing the pastry layers together helps prevent the filling from leaking while baking.
- Cut evenly: For the best snowflake shape, cut the pastry in half, then quarters, then eighths, and finally sixteenths.
- Make ahead: You can assemble and shape the snowflake up to 1 day ahead. Cover tightly and refrigerate. When ready to bake, brush with egg wash and bake straight from the fridge, adding 2–3 extra minutes if needed.
- Freezer option: Assemble and freeze unbaked. Bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the bake time.
- Serving tip: Best enjoyed warm, but leftovers can be reheated in a 300°F oven for a few minutes to re-crisp the pastry.
