I love making homemade ranch dressing because it takes just a few minutes to whisk together, and the flavor is so much better than store-bought. This creamy buttermilk ranch is tangy, herby, garlicky, and incredibly easy to make.

Creamy homemade ranch dressing with fresh herbs served in a small bowl.

I make this ranch dressing with buttermilk, mayonnaise, sour cream, fresh lemon juice, garlic, chives, dill, and parsley. After a quick 30-minute chill in the refrigerator, all those fresh flavors come together into the perfect creamy ranch dressing.

Serve it over a crisp green salad, use it as a dip for fresh vegetables or chicken wings, or toss it with pasta for my Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad. Once you have a jar of homemade ranch in the fridge, you'll find plenty of ways to use it!

Why You'll Love This Homemade Ranch Dressing

    • Easy to make â€“ Everything goes into one bowl, and there’s no cooking involved.
    • Fresh and flavorful â€“ Fresh dill, parsley, chives, garlic, and lemon juice make this ranch taste bright and delicious.
    • Creamy and tangy â€“ Buttermilk, sour cream, and mayonnaise create that classic ranch texture and flavor.
    • Easy to customize â€“ You can adjust the lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper to make it exactly how you like it.
    • Perfect for so many recipes â€“ Use it as a salad dressing, dipping sauce, sandwich spread, or drizzle.

What Does Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Taste Like?

Homemade ranch dressing is creamy, tangy, fresh, and savory. The buttermilk and sour cream add a delicious tang, while fresh dill, parsley, chives, and garlic give the dressing its classic ranch flavor.

Fresh lemon juice adds a little brightness and keeps the dressing from tasting too heavy.

    Ingredients for Homemade Ranch Dressing

    Ingredients for Homemade Ranch Dressing.
    • Buttermilk â€“ Buttermilk gives this dressing its signature tangy flavor while keeping it creamy and pourable. If your dressing gets too thick after chilling, a splash of extra buttermilk will loosen it up.
    • Mayonnaise â€“ Mayo creates a rich, creamy base and gives the ranch dressing a smooth texture.
    • Sour Cream â€“ I love adding sour cream because it adds another layer of tanginess and makes the dressing extra creamy.
    • Fresh Lemon Juice â€“ A little freshly squeezed lemon juice brightens all the flavors. Start with 2 tablespoons and add more to taste.
    • Garlic â€“ Freshly grated or minced garlic gives the dressing that delicious savory flavor I love in ranch.
    • Fresh Chives â€“ Chives add a mild onion flavor without overpowering the other herbs.
    • Fresh Dill â€“ Dill is one of my favorite parts of homemade ranch! It adds that classic herby flavor.
    • Fresh Parsley â€“ Parsley adds freshness and balances the stronger flavors.
    • Sea Salt and Black Pepper â€“ Season to taste to bring everything together.

How to Make Homemade Ranch Dressing

Step 1: Mix the Creamy Base

Whisking buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream together in a bowl to make homemade ranch dressing.
Whisking homemade ranch dressing until creamy and the fresh herbs are evenly combined.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream until smooth and creamy.

I like to whisk the base really well before adding the herbs so everything is evenly combined.

Step 2: Add Lemon Juice and Garlic

Stir in the fresh lemon juice and garlic until fully combined.

Step 3: Add the Fresh Herbs

Add the chopped chives, dill, and parsley. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, then stir everything together.

At this point, give it a quick taste. This is the fun part because you can easily adjust the flavors to your liking.

    Step 4: Taste and Adjust

If you want your ranch a little brighter, add another splash of lemon juice. If it needs more flavor, add another pinch of salt or a little extra garlic.

I always recommend tasting homemade dressing before chilling it because you can easily make those little adjustments before serving.

Step 5: Chill the Ranch Dressing

Fresh homemade ranch dressing ready for dipping vegetables or serving with salad.

Cover the bowl and refrigerate the ranch dressing for at least 30 minutes.

Don't skip this step! The fresh herbs and garlic need a little time to mingle with the creamy base. I find that the flavor gets even better after it has chilled.

How to Use Homemade Ranch Dressing

There are so many ways to use this easy ranch dressing! Here are a few of my favorites:

    • Drizzle over a green salad
    • Use as a vegetable dip
    • Dip crispy chicken tenders into it
    • Toss with pasta salad
    • Spread onto sandwiches and burgers
    • Add to chicken wraps
    • Serve alongside roasted potatoes
    • Use as a dipping sauce for French fries
    • Drizzle over your favorite chicken dinner

You can also use it as a dipping sauce for a quick appetizer or drizzle it over your favorite dinner.

    Munchkin's Tip

Let the ranch chill before serving. Even though you can technically eat it right after mixing, I think it tastes much better after at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator. The garlic and fresh herbs have time to infuse the dressing, making every bite more flavorful.

If the ranch becomes too thick after chilling, simply whisk in a little extra buttermilk until it reaches your favorite consistency.

How to Store Homemade Ranch Dressing

Store homemade ranch dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Because this recipe contains fresh dairy ingredients and fresh herbs, I recommend keeping it refrigerated and using it within about 5–7 days. Give it a good stir before serving.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make ranch dressing ahead of time?

Yes! In fact, I prefer making it ahead. Letting the dressing chill gives the garlic and fresh herbs time to infuse the creamy base and makes the flavor even better.

Can I use dried herbs instead of fresh?

Yes, you can substitute dried herbs if that's what you have on hand. The flavor won't be quite as fresh, but it will still make a delicious ranch dressing.

How can I make ranch dressing thinner?

Add a little extra buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.

How can I make ranch dressing thicker?

For a thicker ranch dressing, use a little less buttermilk or add a bit more sour cream or mayonnaise.

What can I serve with homemade ranch dressing?

This ranch is delicious with salads, fresh vegetables, chicken, fries, roasted potatoes, sandwiches, wraps, and pasta salads. It's also perfect as a dipping sauce.

    Equipment

    • mixing bowl

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup buttermilk
    • â…“ cup mayo
    • â…“ cup sour cream
    • 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed
    • 1-2 clove garlic finely grated or minced
    • 2 tablespoons chives finely chopped
    • 1 tablespoon dill fresh, finely chopped
    • 1 tablespoon parsley fresh, finely chopped
    • sea salt and black pepper to taste

    Instructions

    • Mix the Base: In a medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream until smooth and creamy.
    • Add the Flavor: Stir in the fresh lemon juice and grated garlic until fully combined and silky.
    • Add the Herbs: Add the chives, dill, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until the herbs are evenly distributed throughout the dressing.
    • Taste and Adjust: Taste the dressing and adjust seasoning if needed — add a pinch more salt for flavor or a little extra lemon juice for brightness.
    • Chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors blend and deepen. The longer it chills, the better it tastes.
    • How to use it: Serve with green salad or our favorite Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad.

    Notes

    • For a thinner dressing, whisk in 1–2 tablespoons more buttermilk until you reach your desired consistency.
    • For a thicker, dip-style ranch, reduce the buttermilk to â…“ cup or add an extra spoonful of sour cream.
    • Fresh herbs make all the difference — dill, chives, and parsley give that classic restaurant-style flavor, so try not to skip them if possible.
    • This ranch gets better as it sits. Letting it chill allows the garlic and herbs to infuse into the dressing.
    • Store in an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir well before each use, as natural separation may occur.
