Why You'll Love This Chicken Thigh Recipe

    • Tender and juicy chicken: Chicken thighs are naturally flavorful and stay juicy while baking in the creamy sauce.
    • Rich garlic Parmesan sauce: The creamy sauce is made with simple ingredients and adds tons of flavor to every bite.
    • Easy one-pan dinner: Sear the chicken, make the sauce, and finish everything in the oven using the same skillet.
    • Perfect for busy weeknights: This is an easy chicken dinner that feels special without requiring complicated ingredients.
    • So many sides work: Serve it with rice, mashed potatoes, pasta, vegetables, or crusty bread.

How Long to Bake Chicken Thighs

The baking time for chicken thighs depends on their size and whether you're using boneless or bone-in thighs. For this recipe, boneless chicken thighs are seared first and then baked at 375°F until the thickest part reaches 165°F.

Using an instant-read thermometer is the best way to know when your chicken thighs are done because cooking time can vary from one piece of chicken to another.

For the most flavorful results, don't skip the initial searing step. Browning the chicken creates a delicious golden crust before the thighs finish cooking in the creamy sauce.

Can I Use Boneless or Bone-In Chicken Thighs?

This recipe is written for boneless, skinless chicken thighs because they cook relatively quickly and stay tender in the creamy sauce.

You can also make this recipe with bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs. Keep in mind that bone-in thighs will take longer to cook, so use an instant-read thermometer and cook until the thickest part of the chicken reaches 165°F.

For boneless chicken thighs, choose pieces that are similar in size so they cook evenly.

    Ingredients Needed

    Ingredients Needed

    For the Chicken

    • Chicken thighs: For these oven-baked chicken thighs boneless and skinless is the way to go. They cook much faster! We’re not looking for super crispy skin because it’s covered in the sauce anyway!
    • Butter: Use unsalted butter because we’re adding salt ourselves. Not only to season the chicken but it’s also in the sauce and this way we can control the amount.
    • Seasoning: Salute seasoning from Trader Joe’s or any poultry seasoning you have on hand. You’ll also need some salt and pepper to taste.

    For the Cream Sauce

    • Butter: Again, we’ll stick with unsalted butter. This time we’re going to use it to start the cream sauce by infusing the butter with delicious garlicky flavor.
    • Garlic, finely chopped: The aromatic deliciousness that makes the sauce so tasty.
    • Flour: A thickening agent that helps thicken the sauce so that it coats the chicken nicely.
    • Chicken broth & Heavy whipping cream: Together they are the liquids used to turn the sauce into a rich, creamy, flavorful mixture.
    • Parmesan cheese: I always recommend freshly grated Parmesan, rather than the pre-shredded cheese from a container. It melts much nicer and has more flavor. You can also use Piave cheese, which is similar to Parmesan, but less pungent and sharp because it isn’t aged as long.
    • Salt & pepper: To taste.
    • Fresh dill: Chopped herbs for garnish adds a bright finish to this dish.

See the recipe card for the full information on recipe ingredients and quantities.

How to Make Creamy Oven Baked Chicken Thighs

How to Make Creamy Oven Baked Garlic Butter Chicken Thighs

Step 1: Heat the oven to 375 degrees, and start seasoning the chicken with salt, pepper, and 21 Salute seasoning.

    seared chicken thighs

Step 2: Sear chicken thighs in melted butter over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side. They should be golden brown. Transfer them to a plate and set them aside.

    melted butter with garlic

Step 3: To make the creamy garlic sauce, use the same skillet to melt more butter. Sauté the garlic for about 1 minute until fragrant, stirring a few times to avoid burnt garlic.

    creamy chicken sauce

Step 4: Sprinkle in the flour to make a roux. Once a pale paste is formed, after about 1 minute, start to slowly pour in the chicken broth. Whisk continuously until the flour has dissolved, and the sauce starts to thicken.

Step 5: Stir in the heavy whipping cream along with the Parmesan cheese. Stir to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste.

    creamy chicken thighs

Step 6: Place the chicken back into the skillet and place the entire thing in a preheated 375-degree oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.

Garnish creamy oven baked chicken thighs with dill and some extra grated cheese on top. Complete your meal with mashed potatoes, rice, and some vegetables on the side!

Tips for the Best Creamy Chicken Thighs

    • Pat the chicken dry before seasoning to help it brown nicely.
    • Don't skip the sear. It adds delicious flavor and helps keep the chicken juicy.
    • Use freshly grated Parmesan for the smoothest, creamiest sauce.
    • Don't let the sauce boil too hard after adding the cream and Parmesan, or it can become grainy.
    • Use an instant-read thermometer and cook the chicken to 165°F.
    • Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving so it stays juicy.
    • Serve immediately with mashed potatoes, rice, pasta, or crusty bread to soak up the creamy sauce.

These juicy chicken thighs are perfect for feeding a crowd. Find more family favorites in my Best 4th of July Recipes roundup.

    Variations & Cooking Methods

There are a few easy ways to switch up these creamy chicken thighs depending on what you have on hand or how you like to cook.

    Use Bone-In Chicken Thighs

You can use bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs instead of boneless thighs. They will take longer to cook, so use an instant-read thermometer and cook until the thickest part reaches 165°F. The skin will also add extra flavor to the sauce.

    Make It With Chicken Breasts

Chicken breasts can be substituted for the thighs, although they are leaner and can dry out more easily. Choose pieces that are similar in size and check them early while baking to avoid overcooking.

    Add Mushrooms or Spinach

For extra vegetables, sauté sliced mushrooms with the garlic before making the creamy sauce. You can also stir fresh spinach into the sauce near the end of cooking and let it wilt before serving.

    Make It Extra Garlicky

Love garlic? Add an extra clove or two to the sauce. For even more garlic flavor, try serving the chicken with my Baked Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs.

    Prefer a Different Cooking Method?

If you don't want to turn on the oven, try my Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs made in the air fryer for a quick and flavorful alternative.

For a simple oven-baked option without the creamy sauce, my Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs are another easy weeknight favorite.

Turn It Into a Complete Dinner

Serve these creamy chicken thighs over rice or mashed potatoes to soak up the sauce. For another comforting chicken-thigh dinner with rice, try my Chicken Thighs and Rice.

    Recipe FAQs

    Can I use chicken breasts?

Yes, you can substitute boneless, skinless chicken breasts for the chicken thighs. Keep in mind that chicken breasts are leaner and can dry out more easily, so I recommend using similar-sized pieces and checking them with an instant-read thermometer rather than relying only on the cooking time.

Sear the chicken breasts just as you would the thighs, then finish them in the creamy sauce until the thickest part reaches 165°F. If the breasts are very thick, you can gently pound them to an even thickness so they cook more evenly.

How long to bake boneless chicken thighs in the oven?

Since we’re starting the process by browning the meat on the outside, the chicken will only need about 30-35 minutes in the oven.

Use a thermometer to get an accurate reading. Once it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F, it’s done.

Can I replace heavy cream with half and half?

You can! Keep in mind, the more fat there is the richer and thicker the sauce will be. Half and half won’t lead to the same consistency, but close enough!

How to store leftover creamy oven baked chicken thighs?

Always keep cooked chicken stored in an airtight container in the fridge. You can enjoy leftovers for up to 3 days!

Best way to reheat chicken thighs?

Place them back into the skillet and heat through on the stovetop or in the oven, it’s up to you. You might find adding a splash of broth or cream will help loosen up the sauce again.

    Equipment

    • oven-proof skillet
    • meat thermometer

    Ingredients

    For Chicken Thighs

    • 5 chicken thighs skinless & boneless, dried with paper towel
    • 1 teaspoon 21 Salute Seasoning from Trader Joe's or use any poultry seasoning of your choice
    • salt & pepper to taste
    • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted

    For Creamy Sauce

    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons garlic finely chopped
    • 2 tablespoons flour
    • 1 cup chicken broth
    • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
    • ½ cup Parmesan cheese or prieve cheese, finely grated
    • salt & pepper to taste
    • 2 teaspoon dill finely chopped for garnish, optional

    Instructions

    • First, preheat the oven to 375F. Next, season chicken with seasoning, salt & pepper, on both sides.
    • Now, melt butter in oven-proof skillet over medium heat, add chicken thighs and sear for 2-3 minutes or until golden color on both sides. After, transfer to a plate and set aside.

    To Make Creamy Sauce

    • To make the creamy chicken sauce, melt butter in the same skillet. Once it melts add garlic and saute for 1 minute, stirring few times.
    • Now, add flour and stir continuously for 1 minute. Next, slowly pour in chicken broth and cook for 1 minute stirring continuously, or until sauce thickens. Pour in heavy whipping cream and give it a nice stir. Add cheese, stir and taste it, add more salt or pepper, if needed.
    • Finally, add chicken thighs back into the skillet, coating each thigh in the creamy sauce. Place in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, uncovered or until chicken is cooked thru.
    • Garnish with dill and more cheese, if desired. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Before seasoning the chicken, it's important to pat it dry. By doing this, the excess moisture is removed, which makes the seasoning stick better and gives the chicken a nice sear.
    • When cooking, I personally prefer using butter to sauté garlic and brown the chicken, as it adds an incredible amount of flavor. However, if you prefer, you can use olive oil instead.
    • To ensure that the chicken thighs cook evenly and develop a nice crust that locks in the moisture, it's best to brown them in batches. Overcrowding the skillet can cause uneven cooking and affect the texture of the chicken.

Your recipe says uncovered for the amount of time it cooks. But in one response you said cover until the last 15 mins. So which is it because I want to make it

Hi Denise! Great question! 😊 The recipe is meant to be baked uncovered the whole time for that nice golden finish. Covering can be an option if you notice it browning too quickly, then uncover for the last 15 minutes. I’ll update the notes to make it clearer, thank you for catching that!

I doubled the recipe as I have 3 kids (2 of them teens) my wife and myself to feed. Added a little over double the chicken broth (approx 2.5 cups total) and it worked perfectly. Delicious…. Just like April in the comments, served with Jasmin rice. Soooo good. Thanks for the recipe.

Jasmine rice is such a great pairing too, totally agree—it makes the meal complete! Thanks so much for sharing your tweaks and kind words. So glad you and your family enjoyed it! 😊🍗💛
