This Smash Tacos recipe brings together everything I love about burgers and tacos in one easy dish. The meat cooks right onto the tortilla, the cheese melts perfectly, and the sauce adds a creamy, tangy finish. It’s just as good as it looks on social media and even easier to make!

Why This Recipe Works
I make these Smashed Tacos whenever I want something that’s quick, fun, and full of flavor. It's one of our favorite easy family dinner recipes. Here’s what makes them special:
- Crispy and Juicy: The beef gets smashed right into the tortilla, so it cooks up with a golden, crisp edge while staying tender in the middle. It’s the same satisfying texture I love in my Smash Chicken Burger.
- The Sauce: This creamy, tangy, slightly spicy sauce ties everything together. It’s simple to make but adds that “can’t-stop-eating” flavor that makes these tacos stand out.
- Quick to Make: From start to finish, these come together in under 30 minutes. Perfect for busy nights when you still want something homemade and delicious.
- Customizable: You can use ground chicken, turkey, or even a veggie mix instead of beef. Switch up the cheese or toppings to make it your own.
- Fun and Trendy: These tacos are just as good as they look online. They’ve got that same crispy, creative vibe as my Salmon Tempura Sushi Taco – a little unexpected, but totally worth it.

Ingredients

- Flour Tortillas – Medium-sized tortillas are ideal for this recipe. They hold the smashed beef perfectly and crisp up nicely in the pan. You can use corn tortillas if you prefer a gluten-free option.
- Ground Beef – The main protein that gives these tacos their juicy, flavorful bite. I like using 80/20 ground beef for the best balance of fat and flavor, but ground chicken or turkey also work well for a lighter version.
- Montreal Steak Spice – A bold seasoning blend that adds savory depth to the beef. If you don’t have it, taco seasoning or a mix of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika will do the trick.
- Onion – Finely chopped onion adds a bit of crunch and sweetness to the beef as it cooks. You’ll also use some in the sauce for extra flavor.
- Sharp Cheddar Cheese – Melts beautifully over the cooked beef and adds a rich, tangy flavor. You can swap it for Monterey Jack or a Mexican cheese blend if you prefer.
- Lettuce – Fresh, crisp lettuce adds a cool contrast to the warm, cheesy beef. Romaine or iceberg both work well.
- Ketchup – Forms the base of the creamy sauce, adding a touch of sweetness and tang.
- Mayonnaise – Gives the sauce its creamy texture and smooth flavor. You can use light mayo or Greek yogurt for a lighter option.
- Sriracha – Adds gentle heat and a hint of spice to the sauce. Adjust the amount to your taste.
- Pickles – Finely chopped pickles give the sauce a tangy crunch. Relish works as a quick substitute.

Instructions

- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine ketchup, mayo, sriracha, finely chopped onion, and pickles. Mix well until smooth and set aside.
- Season the Beef: In a medium bowl, mix ground beef with Montreal steak spice. Use gloves to combine evenly, then divide the mixture into 4 equal meatballs.
- Assemble the Tacos: Place one tortilla on a flat surface. Press a meatball directly onto the tortilla, spreading it out evenly to cover most of the surface. Sprinkle one portion of finely chopped onion over the beef and press it in gently with your fingers. Season lightly with salt. Repeat with remaining tortillas.

- Cook the Tacos: Heat avocado oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Once hot, place one tortilla meat-side down in the pan. Cook for 3–4 minutes, or until the beef is browned and cooked through.
- Flip and Add Cheese: Carefully flip the tortilla so the meat side faces up. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the cooked beef. Cook for another 1–2 minutes, until the tortilla turns golden and crisp and the cheese melts.
- Assemble and Serve: Transfer the taco to a cutting board. Add sliced lettuce, chopped cilantro, and a spoonful of the prepared sauce. Fold the tortilla in half, slice if desired, and serve warm.
- Repeat: Cook the remaining tortillas the same way, adding more oil as needed between batches.
- Enjoy: Serve your Smash Tacos hot with extra sauce on the side and your favorite toppings.

Substitutions & Variations
Here are some of my favorite substitutions and variations:
- Protein Options: I usually make these smashed tacos with ground beef, but ground chicken or turkey work great for a lighter version. You can even try ground pork for a richer flavor.
- Seasoning Swaps: If you don’t have Montreal steak spice, use taco seasoning or your favorite spice blend. A mix of garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper also works in a pinch.
- Cheese Choices: I love sharp cheddar for its bold flavor, but Monterey Jack or a Mexican blend melt beautifully too. Use whatever cheese you already have in the fridge.
What to Serve with Smash Tacos
Side Dishes
- These Smash Tacos go great with a few fresh and flavorful sides. We love pairing them with Grilled Mexican Street Corn for that smoky, creamy flavor that complements the crispy tacos perfectly.
- For something lighter, try 10-Minute Avocado Corn Salsa – it adds a cool, refreshing bite that balances the rich beef and cheese.
Appetizers
- Start your meal with a little spice from Jalapeno Poppers or serve a plate of crispy Cheesy Potato Bites for an easy crowd-pleaser.
- If you’re hosting, set out a bowl of 10-Minute Mexican Cheese Dip with chips or serve Beef Samosa (Tortilla Pockets) for a fun, handheld appetizer that pairs perfectly with your tacos.
FAQs
They’re a combination of a smashed hamburger and a beef taco. The beef burger is smashed with the tortilla, spreading the seasoned meat out nice and thin. It’s then cooked on one side and flipped to the other which is when the melted cheese gets added on. Sometimes it’s referred to as a Bic Mac Smashed Taco because of the creamy sauce, lettuce, and sliced pickles that are added on top.
Yes. The sauce can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in the fridge. It actually tastes better after sitting for a few hours because the flavors blend together.
Add more sriracha to the sauce or mix a pinch of chili powder or cayenne into the beef. You can also top the tacos with sliced jalapeños or a drizzle of hot sauce.
Lettuce, cilantro, and the creamy sauce are a great start, but you can add pico de gallo, guacamole, or sliced avocado for extra freshness. Pickles or diced tomatoes also add a nice crunch.
Yes, but handle them carefully since corn tortillas are more delicate. Warm them slightly before pressing on the meat so they don’t tear while cooking.
This can happen from the oil in the pan as well as the grease from the meat. This will cause them to be a bit soggy. If you’re really concerned about this, you can cook the meat side down in the oiled skillet, and once flipped, transfer them to a new, clean skillet to crisp up the tortilla side.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them in a skillet over low heat until warmed through so the tortilla stays crisp. The sauce can be kept separately in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes
- Firstly, you can use any type of ground meat you prefer. If you're looking for a lighter version, ground chicken or turkey are great options since they're leaner than beef.
- Don't have any Montreal Steak Spice? No worries, you can simply use taco seasoning instead. And, if you have relish but no pickles, try using that in your sauce instead. Alternatively, you can skip the sauce altogether and just use sour cream.
- If you're feeling adventurous, swap out the cheddar cheese for Monterrey Jack or Mexican blend. And, when it comes to toppings, the sky's the limit! Load up your dish with pickles, pico de gallo, guacamole, or even sliced avocado and diced tomatoes. Have fun experimenting and enjoy your meal!
